Pool Hunting with the Landau Brothers

Josh and Jason Landau are brothers born and raised in Venice, CA. Both have been intertwined with the Crap world for over a decade.

We first became friends with Jason early on, skating the Venice park. This led to him becoming one of the first members of the Crap skate fam. Jason then linked us up with his older brother Josh, who at the time was frontman and lead guitarist of his thrash punk band The Shrine.

Since they were young, Josh and Jason have shared a unique passion together: skating backyard pools, a less common and more underground subset of skating. When it comes to backyard pools, the hunt for a new pool is as much a part of it as the actual skating itself. Poring over maps, driving down allyways, scouting houses, hopping fences, dodging dogs and cops, draining, cleaning, skating... it’s a labor of love. Very few do it, and even fewer do it as well as Josh and Jason.

With Josh busy from his current music project Stolen Nova and Jason working full time for Supreme, Landau bro pool sessions are a little more rare these days. We were lucky to be on hand recently to document one.

JASON: So many to recall, id be lost without him.
When I was maybe 8-9 and he was around 13. I went with our mom to pick him up from some ally in northside santa monica. He came out to the car and told mom he had to show me something. He took me down the ally, pushed me over a chainlink fence and showed me this empty swimming pool they had just skated. He put his board down and told me to take a run. I probably did a little kick turn and came back up to the shallow. He said this is what we’re doing now. Skating pools. 20 odd years later, here we are.
