Studio Visit: Ashlynn Trane
To gear up for her upcoming feature at our Venice showroom, we visited artist Ashlynn Trane’s studio in Boyle Heights to check out her work and ask her a few questions.
Ashlynn Trane is a Los Angeles-based artist whose work encapsulates double-consciousness and the refinement/consumption culture of products, animals, and bodies. Her meditation on cuteness, beauty, and the packaging they’re presented in serves as analogue to the progressive oppression faced by subjugated bodies.
Ashlynn's work will be on display at our Venice Showroom until the end of the year. Come check out her work at the opening reception next Saturday 10/18.

Any upcoming projects you’re excited about?

Xoxo, oil & acrylic on canvas, 2023
You really own the motif of puppies in your work, what do they mean to you?
Painting puppies is an indirect form of self portraiture for me. At first I was mainly interested in the double meaning of being a “bitch”… but I eventually found that we have a lot more in common. Puppies are the perfect example of the dually destructive and seductive nature of cuteness, commodity, and the man-made.
Best songs to listen to at the studio?
The entire Jockstrap discography and the Nutcracker soundtrack.
Any unexpected rituals that come up in your practice?
I don’t usually start anything until I put on noise canceling headphones and pop in a piece of strawberry lemonade gum.
How do you bring back inspiration when you’re in a slump?
Play dress up! Scroll through my camera roll from start to finish. Listen. Talk about anything other than art and write about it.
