Studio Visit: Priscilla Robinson & West Adler

  • Art
  • Vlog

We stopped by the studio of artists Priscilla Robinson and West Adler to document the install process and talk drawing, sculpture, and of course, bikes.

Priscilla and West are Los Angeles born and raised artists and longtime friends of the brand. They have two distinct, complimentary art practices and work out of their shared home studio in Culver City. Utilizing many mediums, from pencil to scavenged concrete, the two create all things weird and wonderful, light and heavy, dreamy and tactile.

Priscilla and West’s work will be on display at our Venice showroom until the end of the year.

Sharing a home and studio, how do your practices influence each other or differ?

W: I think we both go about making art in completely different ways. In terms of ideation and process. But I also think it’s inevitable when you live with someone every day that you influence each other. I’m inspired by the way Priscilla is constantly making in a natural way, it’s not a task to do or something that has to be done it just is done constantly. Whereas I sit down and use making as a form of research
P: Since we’re both from California I think there is something innate that we both try to capture. I like having someone to bounce ideas off of and he can be quite critical which I think is valuable. I’m very sensitive though, and I also accidentally copy him sometimes lol.

Are there any unexpected rituals that come up when working?

W: Don’t talk to me before I’ve had my coffee.
P: I like to have music or an audiobook. I like to clean up before but not really after, unless I’m doing ceramics. So in a way cleaning is a nice ritual for me. I feel itchy in the brain when I can sense clutter.

What song do you hear when you put one of West's shells to your ear?

W:  If There’s Something by Roxy Music live
P: Freedom of ’76 by Ween

How do you bring back inspiration when you’re in a slump?

W:  Spend time away from the things that were inspiring me before.
P: I usually get inspired by my dreams and I have really strange ones so I  have different problems come up for me. Also the inspiration usually comes about midway through doing something anyway, that’s always the best advice I’ve heard. Not to wait for inspiration to strike but to just do it anyway.

Who lives inside Priscilla's paper houses?

W: Everything lives on the outside of her houses. The insides are blank for a reason.
P: I live in my houses. With Prince.
